My Cousin Rachel

I love period dramas but sadly the film trailer basically tells you everything about the film. It was always obvious what would happen and there were no surprises even with the final conundrum, as it is set up to let you know what will happen later in the film. It was acted well and you will agonise over the main characters' decisions, but it could have done with a lot more suspense, thrill and atmosphere.

Yet the ending is ambiguous.

And at the q&a they said it was played so it could be read either way. The director said he wanted to be sure that even when it's on dvd you can't go back find a particular moment indicating guilt. He wanted to leave it to draw your own conclusions, either could be right.

Saw this yesterday at the Mayfair Curzon at a special screening plus Q&A with the director, Roger Michell. I am familiar with the story, having (many years ago) read the book and have also seen a TV adaptation. As I adore costume dramas, I really liked this film. The locations were stunning, although, as we learned in the Q&A, they were up to 300 miles apart – the house (which is in Surrey) was nowhere near the stables and the stunning cliff scene was actually in Devon. The film and the score captured perfectly the tense moodiness of Daphne du Maurier’s novel. Rachel Weisz was perfectly cast as the enigmatic Rachel, as was Sam Claflin as the naïve, impetuous Phillip. We will never know if Rachel was a poisoner/murderer and this is exactly what du Maurier intended. The Q&A was really interesting and I wished it could have gone on for longer. We learned that the beautiful house (West Horsley Place) had been inherited by Bamber Gascoigne and that he had made it his mission to restore it to its former grandeur. Allowing it to be used for filming must be helping him achieve this. I hope to see it in future films. 9/10

It was quite honestly the most boring film I've seen all year. It was so disjointed and not at all tension filled like the trailers fooled me into believing. It was such a painful watch, I practically ran out of the cinema when the credits rolled.

I was a bit disappointed having really looked forward to this. Both the main actors were really good, Rachael Weisz mysterious and unreadable and Sam Claflin naive and infatuated but it was just quite slow and plodding. It started to gain momentum when Sam Claflin's character reached 25 years of age but to be honest by that time I had lost interest. I guess if you really like Daphne du Maurier books you will probably like this. 6/10

not like the trailer. Why make trailers as misleading like this? In the event, the film was a bit of a plodder, with few really nice scenery/sets that the reviews promised, and the plot...well...how can a guy be that stupid? come on. Perhaps its a muse on how naive youth classify people as good or bad with little grey area.

ok i guess if you crave a costume drama but it brings little to the table except ambiguity and not a small amount of plot stupidity and events happening for absolutely no given reason.

3 stars.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?
