Good Things About The Snow

#1 Post by Ms Thrifty » Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:45 am

I know there's already a "Snow" thread but this is slightly different, as it's meant to focus only on the positive aspects. There are enough disavantages and it's making life difficult for most of us, so I thought it might be worth highlighting the benefits - and there are some!

I'll start by saying that I'm enjoying the brief respite from stupid remarks about my walking poles. No-one can now yell at me "Where's the snow?" or "You've forgotten your skis!". Not only that, but everyone can see that poles actually help in these conditions.

Another advantage is that snow transforms the boring, grey/brown January landscape into a fairytale scene. Who needs to go away when there's a whole new world on your doorstep?

Snow days? Not that I got one, but it's a good thing for those who did. Plus I got a seat on the tube.

Sledging, snowball fights (unless you're in America as you might get a gun pointed at you by a copper) and snow men!

It's so quiet! And beautiful.

And I have had 2 days off this week because of it which is a definite bonus!

Yes, I thought there might be some comments about the unexpected bonus of extra time off work! (Though of course you have to earn it by first making a sterling but vain effort to get there. ) I can certainly second that one.

Yeah it's definitely nice :)

But mainly I just love the magic of it. Sitting at home and then all of a sudden seeing that it's started to snow. It's more exciting than Christmas! :P

Oh and the community feeling that all of a sudden seems to exist. People helping each other to clear pavements, push cars, etc. I like seeing that with all the conflicts and arguments, we can still work together as well.

I agree with the community spirit, everyone admiring my poles and people speaking as you walk by. The housebound patients faces lighting up when you make the effort to go to visit them, it's very humbling.
The neighbours children scraping the ice of your car for a £1 a day, they are making a fortune being off school.

Thanks for the reminder, but that's not my idea of a good thing! That would be having new things to photograph, such as snowmen springing up everywhere and children sledging in the park. (Also, lots or resoureceful shoppers pulling their loads home on sledges, presumably because they'd normally drive.)

I'm spending less money, as I have been snowed in since Monday evening!
