Mortal Engines

#1 Post by raj101 » Sun Dec 09, 2018 7:50 pm

If you want a big effects rollercoaster Star Wars knockoff with your brain switched off for this Christmas then this is it. Its relentless - effects/action/effect/action etc. Those machines do really look huge in IMAX, but to be fair it goes on a bit too long in this vein.

Course, you could always ruin it by switching your brain ON for a moment, and for instance ask yourself why the baddie in charge is hellbent on breaking down the Great Wall to enter the "forbidden land", when he could just fly over it in a dirigible.

Smashing but stupid. 3.5 stars.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?

Went to the multimedia screening at Vue West End. Felt film was way over the top! A mish mash of all dystopia sci-fi, reminds me of Mad Max, there's a bit of Star Wars about it too. May be it's a homage to these great films? It starts off well, but then it got predictable and boring. The visuals and CGI were amazing though, and the rebel leader was so cool ! Then there's a weird robot man with green eyes, who has no heart like the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz (another homage?) and why do they have to drive cities round on wheels? And the characters are so annoying! Lots of cliche lines "The world is changing". So many plot holes, one character seemed to have just disappeared, not even a mention at the end? 5/10

Have not read the books, but apparently, it is part of a quartet with three more books as prequels, again very much like Stars Wars, starting in the middle. Would explain all the gaps, and it is a much more darker subject for the YA audience. Hopefully, the next ones will do the books more justice.
