The Edge of Darkness

#1 Post by andrews » Fri Jan 29, 2010 4:58 pm

Thomas Craven is a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father. When his only child, 24-year-old Emma, is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target. But, he soon suspects otherwise, and embarks on a mission to find out about his daughter's secret life and her murder. His investigation leads him into a dangerous looking-glass world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder -- and to CIA operative Darius Jedburgh, who has been sent in to clean up the evidence. Craven's solitary search for answers about his daughter's death transforms into an odyssey of emotional discovery and redemption.

Did anyone see this when it was on the BBC in 1985? Bob Peck was terrific in the role of Craven. I am beginning to feel old now, as I realise several members were not even born then, never mind watching sinister thrillers on the Beeb....

Besides some nice action moments briefly at the end and the middle, this was very disappointing, it felt episodic and the emotions of such a tragedy never really seemed to hit. It's a shame Gibson has returned in a lacklsuster flick, still, he's still got it.
5/10

Can't agree more, it's very badly edited. The whole film feels very jumpy and stop-start. Whilst Mel Gibson might still have it, he has aged quite alot since his last films. In feel it's quite similar to State of Play, but this is a poor thriller.

We saw this on Friday night. There were a lot of people in the cinema, which was very good news, I suppose. I was there with free tickets, but other people had to p*y to watch this mediocre, lacklustre film. I was disappointed, as the BBC production of many years ago was excellent. I was surprised to read in the opening credits that BBC Films were involved. How much of a role did they have? Not much, I bet.

It was dreadfully slow at the beginning - well nearly the first hour - I felt myself nodding off. It picked up in the middle and the end was fine, given the dull first hour. There was never any real tension, or malice. There was no threat or fear. I expected it to be so much more. Please don't be put off by my views. I saw the original on the BBC in 1985. It made such an impact, I can still remember it, and I can't say that about many TV series that I've seen.

6/10 from me - and that's generous.

Hmm...I wish I could catch the original TV show. As after watching this Hollywood version, I just couldn't imagine the BBC making such a pile of ****......

You can get the DVD of the original series from the HMV website for just £3.99. Which is a bargain whichever way you look at it.

Thanks Kevin. I think I might just b*y it. Of course, knowing me, it won't live up to my memory of it....

I saw this on a voucher on Monday. 10 people in the cinema, including a Russian guy with a very deep loud voice. I ended up moving to sit right at the back with no one near me at all. Film was directed by the original director funnily enough, ad the BBC had something to do with it as well.

It was ok if you want a nice little conspiracy movie. Gibson has aged a lot and is he really that short? I thought the last half hour went a bit nutso. I can't really remember the TV version so can't compare. 7/10
preferred locations Shepherds Bush, Westfield, Notting Hill, Central London, Wimbledon, Islington, Wandsworth thanks
