London Marathon - HELP where is best to stay!

#1 Post by marjoreemarjora » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:09 am

Hope some of you guys can give me some advice on this please :cross:

I am coming down to London as my daughter has decided to run the marathon this year. She is living in London at the moment. She has not done anything like this before.

Hubby & I need to book a hotel.

She is suggesting Canary Wharf or Greenwich.

We had booked somewhere near Paddington but she is not sure this is a good place to be. I have absolutely no idea so hoping the locals or runners could let me know..

How easy is it to get about on Marathon day as know London will be heaving.

Thoughts and advice pretty please.

(If I have posted in the wrong place AYBG/Beate feel free to move)

She is right, Canary Wharf or Greenwich are good places to be for the marathon. They are very popular locations, especially around the Cutty Sark or where you can see them come round twice at Canary Wharf. We live very near the foot tunnel and just have to go up the road to see them running but prefer to watch it on telly as there is no getting anywhere on that day, with masses of people blocking the roads. Canary Wharf is expensive to stay but there is an Ibis in Maritime Greenwich that isn't too bad and it's in a nice location close to the park, restaurants and the Picturehouse Greenwich.

thanks Beate, unfortunately IBIS Greenwich full. Might be able to get a room at IBIS docklands near Blackwall station. would this be a good place

sorry for stupid questions

if I stay there will DLR still be running with all these folks about? Need to get into London to be near finishing line when she gets in.

DD will be in slow group and expect they will have lots of supporters, so dont want to be stuck out there and not be about to say well done when she fininshes - hoping she does :cross:

She is not a runner so this will be a huge effort for her!

Want to try and see her, but knowing my luck will stand at the wrong place and miss her!

Wish I were like HIRO and could just teleport about!!

thanks for any advice folks

The DLR does run on Marathon day and I think even ups it's service. These links might help give you an idea of where the route is and what's nearby:

Canary Wharf area is definitely a good spot - you can then mooch about in the shopping centre if you get bored! I used to live on the route and could see a bit of the route from my window. I was always away that weekend though and had to stay away until at least 4/5pm else the roads were closed!

Preferred cinemas: Most Central London, Finchley Road, Swiss Cottage, Islington, Holloway and West India Quay, Greenwich (O2 / Odeon only) or Stratford City if there is nothing else!
