Volcanic Ash - The Day The Sky Stood Still

#1 Post by anakin » Fri Apr 16, 2010 4:44 pm

Anyone affected by the volcanic ash? My OH may not be flying out to the US for work tomorrow (hurrah for me, not so much for him).

Latest news says airspace closed until at least 7am (his flight is only a few hours later) whereas Scotland will be opening soon...

Hopefully he'll get to go by Sunday / Monday and not miss / not miss too much of the conference... else there's no point really.

Interestingly, not all aircraft are grounded, just those that fly really high. Light aircraft and those that don't fly high enough to require a pressurised cabin can still fly - they just don't have the range or capacity of long hawl flights.

This is crazy, now all flights are suspended until Sunday 1am. I have a colleague who wanted to fly to Mexico today and another who wanted to go to Cyprus. I have another colleague who is set to return from Glasgow on Monday morning (he probably has the best chances of getting back) and clients stranded all over Europe. I know it's no one's fault really but who is p*ying for this? People can't afford extended holidays and accommodation that has quadrupled price over night. If you cancel your holiday last-minute you won't get your money back either from the hotels etc as absolutely no one says he is responsible for a so-called "Act of God", and the insurance companies don't want to know either!

Well I don't fly anyway (I do know that some people have no choice - it's not a criticism) but the current crisis makes me think that I will need to be very careful when renewing my annual travel insurance. I shall p*y particular attention to the exclusions, because not all insurance companies are the same in this respect.

Yeah definitely worth p*ying attention to the small print!

I don't particularly think any insurance company would p*y up for Acts of God...
