Couldn't find a thread on this film...but if there already is one I'm very sorry.
Just had to make one so I could say it is easily one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking films I've seen in a while.
The acting was amazing, both from the children and adults. Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield are heart wrenchingly good at what they do and are exactly who and how I imagined the characters to be.
Many are quick to criticise adaptations from books and I know I'm only one opinion, but the book has always been one of my favourites in the beautiful way it has with words and how it develops the story in the most unexpected way. It may not be translated perfectly onto screen as the book's structure and pace has to be slightly changed to fit but I do think it is made in the most perfect way for the story to work on screen.
It will never be perfectly like the book...that's just how book to film adaptations are and I think any lover of the book has just got to accept that and take it almost as two separate mediums. At the end of the day, the characters and the story itself are made and envisioned exactly how I imagined and wanted it to be.
It managed to tear my heart out and that's the most poignant thing I remember from reading the book.

Directed by Mark Romanek.
Starring: Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Charlotte Rampling, Sally Hawkins, Nathalie Richard, Andrea Riseborough.
Plot: In his highly acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro created a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. In it he posed the fundamental question: What makes us human? Now director Mark Romanek, writer Alex Garland and DNA Films bring Ishiguro's hauntingly poignant and emotional story to the screen. Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley) live in a world and a time that feel familiar to us, but are not quite like anything we know. They spend their childhood at Hailsham, a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. When they leave the shelter of the school and the terrible truth of their fate is revealed to them, they must also confront the deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal that threaten to pull them apart.

Never Let Me Go
I know I'll probably be the minority regarding this, however despite the excellent acting by all, the film could not keep my attention. It was too long (v.similar to the film AI in mood) and dismal; I was very disappointed as the reviews were relatively good for this dark, dull & dreary film. I also really like Remains of the Day, one of Kazuo Ishiguro previous books. I'm not sure how true a reflection the film is of the book, as I haven't read the latter and am unlikely to do so after watching this miserably paced film.

Re: Never Let Me Go
I saw this a few days ago and yes it's definitely a fidgeting film if you're not in the right frame of mind. It goes along at a sedate, leisurely pace, I think most people would enjoy it if they were watching it at home in their own time.
I think the fault of the film, is the so called plot twist is revealed 1/2 hour into the film, so it's never really shocking. The film reminds me of Atonement, but it's no where near as touching and you half wonder if the film will turn sci-fi for a moment (obviously not being based on a Kazuo Ishiguro novel).
I thought the acting was more functional rather than amazing, Andrew Garfield was probably the best of the main 3 leads (Carey Mulligan I expected more post The Education).
More surprising was the director Mark Romanek, from One Hour Photo (which I liked) to this?? And his background is a music video director and he hasn't made a feature film for 8 years..... I am almost as surprised as when Ang Lee went from Eat Drink Man Woman to Sense and Sensibility...
Actually I enjoyed the sedate pacing and the touching ending, so 7/10 despite numerous reservations

Re: Never Let Me Go
Does anyone have the Guardian from yesterday as they were offering a free download of the book? (Seem to think maybe Ms Thrifty is a Guardian reader????)
If so could they please post how to get the download?
Have been online and they do not seem to have the offer but they do have this interview with Kazuo Ishiguro http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/ ... uch-i-know
Many thanks

Just seen at Richmond Odeon. Such a shame that it wasn't anywhere near full yet all the tickets had been taken. A wonderful performance from Carey Mulligan and beautifully filmed. So touching and thought provoking.
