Re: Rock of Ages
Saw this at a 3/4 full Bournemouth Odeon and loved every minute of it. Good job i was in the back row doing my air guitar, brought back some happy memories of my younger years. Found Tom Cruise character brilliant, throw in Russell Brand,Alex Baldwin and Mickey(monkey/baboon) youve got a winner. This was my era, great music, good story, funny in places and loved the characters. Rock And Roll

Re: Rock of Ages
Saw this tonight to a packed Covent Garden Odeon.
I have seen the stage show and now the film. Both are great in different ways but in both instances you must love...ROCK music. If you don't then you won't like it. The sound track is the main attraction. Growing up in the eigthies and listening to the sound track just brought back memories.
Everyone in the film was fine. Paul Giamatti especially and even Tom Cruise whom I had reservations playing Stacee Jaxx. Not a great fan of Russell Brand but even he was ok in it.
It's cheesey and cliched ridden but done very well. Add the music and it is a great guilty pleasure of a film. It's a feel good film.

Re: Rock of Ages
Just come back from seeing this with my mate
We both cringed as soon as the bus driver started singing.
It was ok though, Stacee Jaxx and his romp with the reporter stole the whole show in my eyes, and not forgetting the comedy duo of brand and baldwin!
The only thing I didnt like about this was the zzzzzzzzzz boys?? double the ee double the zz double the shit.
Oh and the two main leads. Awful, hated them, cheese on a stick in the best of places.
And was it just us or did snogging and licking take up most of the space NOT filled by singing?
4/10
Would have been a 5 had they not included dont stop believing.(purely cause i cant break away from the murdered glee version)
May I add
10/10 for the soundtrack, cause lets face it the orignal dont stop believing is still awesome

Re: Rock of Ages
Tonight, I discovered I had a crush on Tom Cruise. And when I close my eyes, I see the first scene we see him. Yes, the very first shot. It haunts me.
Anyway, I thought I would never manage to see the film: no premiere tickets, worked last night, and printed the wrong tickets for tonight (it was those for yesterday's screening that I actually forwarded to someone else!) X_X
5min before leaving home, realizing my mistake, I took a picture of the ticket on my computer screen as my printer didn't work - arrived on time, waited for my +1 who was also waiting for me, but somewhere else! We finally made our way to the cinema at 6.30: time of the beginning. The usher let us in. We missed a few seconds!
I disliked Cherrie's voice / singing and Drew + her baby faces. For me they didn't connect to the film and atmosphere at all. Too pretty-innocent-babydolls
except for the Boys Band moments which were reaaaally good!
but I tried not to p*y too much attention... It really annoyed me when she sang, but I enjoyed the rest.
I was surprised to see that the film was truly cheesy - not like a lot of films that try to be funny and are not at all so turn into a bad cheesy and pathetic story ; here it was a cheesy-on-purpose
(I understand myself, don't worry)
Baldwin/Brand didn't bother me that much, they were ok. Same for Zeta Jones and Co (a few good surprises among the actors!). Not great, not bad, good dancing and singing.
I actually spent my time focusing on Tom Cruise and wondering when he got so hot. The rock star look suits him very well. That traumatized me I don't know if I can write a proper review as you can see.
8.5/10, for you, baby

Re: Rock of Ages
Obivously you have to look at this movie very differently from the show. With that in mind tyhis was mindlessly rousing fun, if a bit overlong. OK Cruise was well cast, I admit I was wrong about him now, in fact he was a fantastic Jaxx. Awesome ditties that made more of the songs than the stage did. I dont think lack of story is a problem these days when stories as stupid as ..Prometheus get redlit, ahem. This was supposed to be one long music video!
Except Baldwin. err, no. Return to Go, do not collect £200.

Re: Rock of Ages
I've not seen the stage show and the jukebox musicals I have seen have been a mixed bag, but I thought this was tremendous fun.
Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand stole the show for me, in fact most of the supporting cast outshone the bland leads.
I left with a big grin on my face, but I can definitely understand why some people may hate it - just give in to it and you'll have a great time.
One small thing, I was distracted throughout wondering how they were going to crowbar the Blur song Tracy Jacks in, the name seemed too close to be just a coincidence. Is there any reason for the name that's clearer in the stage show or is it just a cool rock n roll name?
Re: Rock of Ages
Blame my kids for the fact that I don't get much sleep ... I fell asleep within 10 minutes of this film and missed best part of it!! I wasn't the only one .. a Chinese woman next to me also slept right through it!! From the bits I did see, I know I would love the stage show!! And I probably would have enjoyed this film more, had it made sense to me, but missing crucial parts doesn't help when trying to comment!! I do apologise ....
Re: Rock of Ages
Surrey Quays (Times+ screening) woz only about 1/3 full. Lovely Premier seats with leg room and large screen which span screen 8.
Started off with a spine tingle Sherrie. (she has gorgeous eyes)
I loved everybody singing on the Greyhound coach
Ended with another spine tingle.
Drew and Sherrie singing/huge concert
Inbetween was a bit up n down. You have to give Tom Cruise credit as Stacee Jaxx and Russell Brand was ok as Lonny especially
wiping the microphone on his knob
but not
snogging Dennis Dupree
A real surprise was the
monkey who was fantastic
It was ok but I don't know if my view would have changed if I had not seen the play.
