That's what I thought - haven't seen them before at a preview up here. Gave us a chance to get our popcorn & cans of coke open without disturbing anyone though!Image

I saw this at Whiteleys, and was asked for ID for the first time ever. I wasn't that moved by the film, thought the kids were great in it but Cameron Diaz was woefully bad. The cinema itsself was dreadful. Down my side of the room the lights didn't really go down very much, I could easily see my watch, probably could have read a book. Every time the door opened you could hear the next door film which was another distraction. 6/10

I know what you mean, I can't stand Odeon Whiteleys either, you can even hear the ushers talk in the lobby from the screening room!

Saw this at Cineworld Glasgow on Thursday, about 85% full, unfortunately I was late due to circumstances beyond my control (my mother) so ended up missing the first 5 mins and sitting in the very front row. Despite these setbacks I got into the film pretty quickly, and although I found it wasn't that faithful to the book (particularly in the ending, but also along the way) I actually think I enjoyed the film better. I didn't think the book's 'twist' ending was very good as it kind of undermined all the points the book had been trying to make along the way. I thought this was a sad, sweet film, 8/10.

that reminds me of something else that happened. It looked like one usher was sitting down watching the film, then another came in and they had a conversation by the door! Why couldn't they go outside?

I have just finished reading the book and I have to say that I'm glad I saw the film first as the book was amazing and I would have felt VERY disappointed at doing it the other way around.

I too, am upset, disappointed and confused as to why the ending had changed so much. Don't get me wrong, I did like the movie and did cry a couple of times, but the book was the first one to bring me to tears! I've not cried reading anything before!!

I suppose all I can say is read the book. Glad I gave the film a score of 6.5/10. It's justified. (For info, I would give the book 8/10)

That is interesting priamia. It sounds like the book makes the original ending sound a lot more plausible and moving. For me that ending would not have worked in the film - I don't think it would have come across at all believable - and I think I would have been doing a lot of  as I left the cinema. However I do appreciate that it would have been unexpected and that could have added to experience of the film. I guess it would depend on how the director and the actors handled it. Like the casting of Cameron Diaz, it doesn't immediately seem fitting - but the tone of the book may be different to the film. I think I had one emotion throughout the whole film - sad :tears: It wasn't excitable (if that is the right word...) in any way and I didn't feel it should be. I mean I don't think they were out to shock us with overly dramatic twists and turns.

I'm going to read the book (since it comes so highly recommended!) to see how I feel about the original ending.

that's why I think they maybe did test screenings before changing the end... maybe it wasn't received well in the context of the rest of the film and that's why they decided to change it?
