I have just finished reading the book and I have to say that I'm glad I saw the film first as the book was amazing and I would have felt VERY disappointed at doing it the other way around.
I too, am upset, disappointed and confused as to why the ending had changed so much. Don't get me wrong, I did like the movie and did cry a couple of times, but the book was the first one to bring me to tears! I've not cried reading anything before!!
I suppose all I can say is read the book. Glad I gave the film a score of 6.5/10. It's justified. (For info, I would give the book 8/10)
