The Sense of an Ending

#1 Post by D-Fens » Sun Apr 02, 2017 7:38 pm

Struggling to p*y the bills and come through for their loved ones, three sexagenarians risk it all by embarking on a sedate bid to take from a bank.

Their memory bank

The trailer gives a better sense what you're going to get from this movie and for the most part I loved it. I got the sense the audience was being particularly quiet and it made for a really great screening. The story relies a little on creating a sense of confusion but stick with it and everything will become clear. The cinematographer has a great sense for interesting, unobtrusive imagery. My only issue was that I couldn't quite make sense of what it all ultimately meant. Perhaps a little rushed towards the end or I was just lacking a bit of common brain feels.

Does anybody know what the relevance of the

low wave to Broadbent's character was? Just a suggestion she was willing with him too?

In a sense but ultimately no, Going in Style features octogenarians.

I came here to talk about 'Sense of an Ending' but I feel like I've wandered into some sort of alternatively random reality.

A slow moving film, but well worth it in the end. An excellent mystery drama, with an all-star cast, Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Harriet Walther ("The Crown") and Michelle Dockery ("Downton Abbey"). It is quite complicated and looks back to an event that happened 50 years earlier as a memory re-told by Jim Broadbent, trying to learn the secret that Charlotte Rampling, a girl who he dated at University, seems to hold.

A bit of tedium at the beginning, with the letter he receives, "will he, won't he", open and read this blasted letter, which starts the chain of events. A thought provoking film. We all reminisce, we all have memories, but is what we remember accurate. Bit by bit, the truth unfolds. 8/10

Totally confused by all this discussion! LOL

The first sentence is definitely in the wrong film discussion, and Jim Broadbent is definitely in Sense of an Ending, unless I was watching a different film! :D :D :D

A well crafted story with a secret that has to be unraveled. I had not read the book so it was all new to/ me so it did take me a bit of time to work out what had happened.
The Q & A at the BFI with the director Ritesh Batra and the author Julian Barnes was very illuminating. 8/10

Saw this today as ì know I won't have a lot of free time this week due to invigilating duties. I must admit I struggled with this film with the constant flipping back and forward in time. Sometimes I was struggling as to who was who in the past. I'm not really sure what the point was of the story of his daughter choosing to be a single parent was included. I haven't read the book but doubt if it would appealed to me with the time switching. Maybe I need to watch it again when I'm in a better frame of mind to really appreciate this film . . .I didn't get a great "Sense of an Ending" after my viewing.
