Saw at cineworld renfrew st, as usual was very busy and, hurrah, this time there weren't lots of people leaving as soon as they saw it was subtitled (a la Priceless), but then again there were people coming in late and blocking off the subtitles for everyone else. I'm not sure how to rate this, as my enjoyment was affected positively and negatively by things that weren't really to do with the film.
Positively because, as I am taking French lessons just now to improve my somewhat rusty French, I really enjoyed working out things that were said before the subtitles came up, or the things that weren't subtitled (there were a couple) or the things that were subtitled differently than what was actually said (particularly the songs were pretty different). We studied the art of subtitling a bit when I studied French at first year of university but I think this has been the first time my French has been at a standard where I can actually appreciate it. Anyway, like I say that wasn't especially about the movie as it might have applied to any French film.
My experience was negatively impacted by my bf, who didn't want to come in the first place- that is, he wanted to come out to the cinema but not to see a French film, particularly one about fashion. I persuaded him to come using such methods as 'well, you liked Priceless and that was a French film' and 'you liked the Duchess and that had fashion in it' and 'you really liked Frost/Nixon and you thought it would be rubbish'. So he came along but in a foul mood and spent the whole of the film looking thoroughly unhappy to be there, making me feel guilty for dragging him along. This is not the first time this has happened and I should really learn my lesson and just go alone!
Anyway, as to the actual content of the film, I do have to say that Coco Chanel's life didn't seem that interesting, and although I enjoyed seeing how she changed fashion forever, I still didn't feel that involved with the characters and I think if I hadn't been enjoying listening to the French I might have found it boring. Overall I'm still glad I went to see it and I'd probably watch it again, so I'll give it 6.5/10.
