Re: Philomena

Wow, I loved this so much. A film that can render every emotion within you at once - laughter, sadness, surprise, anger, frustration, loss and hope. A wonderful, true story, with so many twists enriched by great direction with first class acting from the faultless Judi Dench, supported admirably by ...

Re: Gravity

[quote="eumenides"] First 10 minutes ruined by lack of 3d and the remainder by a lack of story and prior over hype. IMAX might have helped the aesthetics as we were in a tiny and packed screening room but I was frustrated most with the plot. Yes, my view exactly. Probably the most disappointed I ...

Re: Saving Mr Banks

Well, as someone who adored the Mary Poppins movie, the book itself and Disney in general as a child, this film was right up my Cherry Tree Lane in many respects, but I can't help wondering if Saving Mr Banks may hold limited appeal perhaps and that the general demographic may not go for this as ...

Re: Girl Most Likely

Wasn't going to bother with this based on the 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the poorer reviews on here but, do you know, it wasn't half bad after all. Quite a relaxing watch after some of the more heavy viewings lately and a simple enough story with decent actors and characters, I felt (I'm a ...

Re: Prisoners

Excellent movie. Despite the two and a half hour duration, time flew as the film was so engrossing, with a permanent tension that never yielded for a moment. Credit to all the actors for superb performances and an ending that I did not expect. One of my favourite thrillers of the year.

Re: Rush

Wanted to see this based on the reviews and finally did so on Sunday. So glad I made the effort. Even though I'm not a motor racing fan, I found this riveting throughout - the story, acting and direction were superb, not to mention the incredible soundtrack. The two main actors were brilliant and I ...

Re: The Way Way Back

This was such a great film - possibly my favourite this year, up there with Mud. Superb casting, characters sensitively and believably portrayed, gentle and sweet, and an identifiable coming of age story to boot. Such a change from the noisy, special effect all action movies that dominate. Really ...

Re: We're the Millers

I really loved this film. Totally implausible storyline of course but so carefully crafted it did not matter one jot. Plenty of laughs, brilliantly warm characterisation and thoroughly entertaining all the way for me. The rest of the packed cinema seemed to share my approval. Do go see if you want ...

Re: Pain & Gain

This is not the sort of film I would normally choose but so glad I made the effort to go because I thought it was a funny, entertaining and fascinating movie. The performances were impressive - particularly loved Dwayne Johnson - and the true story intrigued me enough to check it out on my arrival ...

Re: The Heat

I really loved this movie! Watched it shortly after seeing This is the End so two very funny, enjoyable films in a row for me. Thought the pairing of Bullock and McCarthy was brilliant - great chemistry, lots of laughs, decent enough plot and well-paced. The audience seemed in agreement too. 9/10 ...
